Corona: We talked about Corona and what it is doing to our lives and the economy.
On the positive side we noted the surprising ways that our society is changing. Discussions about global warming did not help with CO2 rates, but Corona did. So much more is possible than what we thought. We believe that there are economic and societal disruption opportunities now for MyData. We need to think big and act.
Thoughts, everybody?

Magdi has left for Sudan, so RTTT has slowed down. It looks like there’s not going to happen a lot in the short term. Sari sent a representative to MyData to the New York meeting, and it looks like there were other interested parties in investing. Sari will give him a call (Andreas) to see which were the other people/foundations that showed interest in investing in our industry.
Johannes is attending tomorrow a phone meeting with people from ITEGA, hosting, Jack from Seattle who is an incubator for VCs, Jordan raising a fund to invest. Fred Wilson, 2020s predictions he is endorsing the same space as we have foreseen but much more crypto related. They believe in total decentralisation, it’ more about the crypto environment.
Mark says they had an event with Kathy Giori and Mozilla at Embarcadero: Prifina’s profile is really interesting and they have good traction. They prioritize in a conference in Lille, France, to promote the model of permissions. They propose a scheme where the basic profile of a consumer and privacy attributes are conserved as a bootstrap. Mozilla’s focus is on smart home, and they are working with the web of things (IoT concept taken to web). They want to include the humans in the home. Data descriptions of the human being treated as a human twin.
Mozilla laid off 70 people including Kathy, so, IoT Project’s team has been reduced dramatically. Mozilla wants to work on privacy through their browser. In order to connect the things together, one of the core components they need is the information model. They cannot interconnect advertisers if every player has a different schema. So Profina wants to work in this as one of their verticals, but they want to work as a horizontal platform.
Julian says we have to normalize all data, finance, social, health… So they have implemented a full system and when they import data from Digi.me, they create a Map. If you go out and look to the web, there is not a standard, banking has many, health has many, education has many… so this is a problem. They have built these tool sets and they are standardizing everything. Later this year, they will set up a non profit and set up the normalisation tools and hand it to Kantara and ask them to prepare a standard.
We have created a specific group and we meet every Tuesday. We need to produce a one pager so that we can start approaching sponsors and get some money upfront. We are thinking of November 11th-12th. Sari says we could use Mozilla or Twitter.
Johannes proposes to open a Blog area in our Silicon Valley Hub website. People can publish news about their companies, about the conference. We will create some posts about it in the General Channel.
Mark thinks that our objectives should be in line with MyDAta HQ, Julian says that in the short term, we should secure the financial stability of MyData. We need to look for sponsors and we need to put some effort in finding financing for the Global Organisation. How much time do HQ have to support other hubs? Not much. The Hubs should do the local stuff. There is an intent to get more people involved and spreading the message, but in the coming months the focus is to get funding for the global HQ. If we need something, we can always give our feedback and try to get help.
During Finland’s Presidence of EU, there was a conference where MyData had some keynotes.
We should discuss in next month’s meeting what’s the goal of this monthly meeting and try to attract more people to the meetings. We should try to reach more people. Julian proposes that we attend other similar events and try to bring people. Mark says that Crypto and SSI attract a lot of attention and we might position ourselves there.

Event committee.
Discussion on financials for the conference. Johannes has asked if MyData office has ideas on financing and on the business model of it. No clear answer.
We would like to put together a description of what we are doing and to whom. Asking Michael Becker to help in that.
Questions:
What is the organizational structure for putting up an event? Conference committee? Setting up a company?
We need conference strategy. What is needed right now in the space of MyData and who would we like to have at the conference?
General market for this type of conferences. Many data privacy conference, but where can we provide solutions. How can we differentiate? For example data brokering business solutions or what is it that we focus on?
Different models for conference concepts to choose from:
Attraction points. Key stars in the space. Do we find big names to draw the crowd?
People who are solving it in everyday level
Future and big companies
Using our strength as MyData global organization and solutions on how to deal with the federal level (GDPR knowledge, what will happen in the US at the federal level?)
Action items for the event committee:
A. One pager. We need to write down a basic concept of what this conference is about.
Michael, Paul, Sari and others will write a one pager about the concept. We collect a bunch of one pager ideas. Deadline next week Tuesday at noon. Lets invite all to write one pagers.
B. Sponsors. We take the one pager to possible sponsors.
Social media outreach. MeetUp pages, we would like to keep it. Eventbrite and Facebook too. Lets keep it going and announce Hub meetings in all channels. Josep promised to do that.
Next meetings.
for Conference organizing will be Tuesday at noon next week on the zoom channel. We will look at the one pagers.
for next MyData Hub meeting is the second Thursday in February at noon. Josep will reach out to Seth to get it going.

Mozilla building, Mountain View
Remote:
The only point that we will be treating today is the organization of MyData North America Conference 2020.
Kaliya and Johannes have created a document where we will be working in the coming weeks. I have written the link above so that we can easily access during the coming months. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ADPI4ghDH96eOtaEYEZ7RLHTj4cc1EPXmmO3O5Kns-g/edit?usp=sharing
We have divided the main tasks in 4 groups. All of us will bring ideas and participate in all of them as much as possible but we have chosen leaders for each of them . These are the groups:
1.- Sponsors: Kathy and Sari will be leading this group 2.- Program: Johannes will lead this one. Soren and Paul and Mark will co-operate. 3.- Venue: Kaliya will be leading this part in cooperation with group 3. 4.- Budget: Josep and Kaliya will lead this group.
During the rest of the meeting we have discussed about the Conference and we will find all the information about the meeting as well as all the work that we need to do and we will be doing in the document linked above.

Elections Result
Our Hub did not get any representative in any of the available positions. From our Hub we congratulate all the board and steering group members. Josep showed his personal concern and added that “This was really disappointing. It’s difficult to understand and really discouraging from my personal point of view how a global organisation like MyData has not had the vision to choose any representative in the most critical area in the world regarding personal data, as Silicon Valley.” We all think it’s a pity but we need to keep working.
Sari is alternate for Jogi on the Board.
Fund Raising, the role of our organisation and Race-To-The-Top (RTTT)
We are contacting with several actors in the FundRaising industry who are starting to coordinate the creation of a group of investors which investment thesis is similar to our principles. We agreed on working with RTTT in creating the ecosystem.
Sari mentioned that one of his contacts was in the last meeting in NY and would provide some feedback on what was discussed there.
Our colleague Soren is also organising some events at Stanford University. Another colleague, Seth, is already working on his own project and already raised funds, so it looks like things are starting to ramp up.
People are already talking about a so called Privacy-tech category. Our Hub should be active in this field and we are thinking of ways to do that.
One of the participants says that MyData Global is working on the MyData certification programs. We discussed whether to have our own organisation certification or not. Me2B is already working on that. The difference is that MyData will certify people, while Me2B certifies products
We propose different ways of making ourselves visibles such us do matchmaking events. Also one of us proposals that we should talk to Pension Funds so that they start thinking of allocating their funds into companies that are respectful with data.
Kathy offers us the possibility of reaching more people through Mozilla and open innovation.
Finally we discuss about Contract for the Web that gets a lot of press but it’s not inclusive.
ANG:
A New Government (ANG) is a process that is starting in Europe. We consider that this is not interesting for the US market as there are many standards already here and we don’t need another one.
Connectathlon
Mark is working in a map that shows how the Green Internet should work. He says he is working on creating a real demo to show all the agents how it works, and how a GDPR compliance process would work on the Green internet. He would be open to pitch his proposal to the right audience. SSI Incubator is preparing a demo day of their new batch on December 12th.
JFK/Conference
We should organize an big event and start generating some noise. We should leverage on the Unconference and try to do ours right after or before. We should be able to create a group of angel investors, or VCs and connect investors with startups. We should talk to existing entrepreneurs to understand how they raised money, and try to get the first money in for ”our“ startups.
We could get some traction from Sacramento and Oakland privacy groups which seem to be pretty active. They track every surveillance company and check which are ready for the CCPA starting in January.
We should organize events both in East and West Coast. Johannes mentions that we could get some sponsorship from Me2B. We propose to organize our first conference during the last week of October 2020. We will check availability in the Computer Museum. In this conference we should have at least 3 perspectives, Government, People’s, and Startus+Investors. Previously we will try to organize an Investor conference around 28-30 of April. We agree on having a monothematic meeting regarding this event.
NFDR
This is an organisation in Malaysia that is creating a framework for press digital rights, SSI, data lockers and all kind of tools to protect rights. It is lead by the IO foundation in Malaysia. We should talk to them and find out more.

Board elections
We agreed on our hub presenting a candidate to the Board of My Data. In case there’s no one willing to become a candidate, Mark Son-Bell offered himself to participate as our candidate. Our hub needs to have representation as Silicon Valley plays a key role in the personal data industry, and we need to be part of this key role by having a board member in the global organisation. Only by having a board member we will be taken seriously by the big companies in Silicon Valley when we approach them.
IIW.
We talked about the interesting conferences and meetings that were held during the IIW (Internet Identity Workshop) held in Mountain View the first week of October.
Me2B
Johannes explained to us how the Me2B community (he is also one of the founders there) is creating some groups and a small fund to help people and companies develop some self-sovereign identity related projects such as creating some legal sfuff to be shared with politicians in order to prepare a federal law, or a “wikipedia” for tech products that are using personal data. We talked about the possibility of joining forces with Me2B. We are working in the same area, but they are a bigger organisation in Silicon Valley but smaller on a global scale.
Helsinki Conference
Unfortunately none of the attendants to this monthly meeting had the chance to be in Helsinki. All the information will be available on Slack in a few days based on what is being posted by the organisers.

Wrap up and conclusions for our 1st full moon event.
People liked the event and did not want to leave in the end. That is all positive. We need to talk about and create specific projects to get people to take action and contribute. We are happy and will continue with full moon events.
Planning September 13 meeting. There is an Omidyar meeting on the same day focusing on VCs investing on start-ups that care about data privacy. Message: Data privacy solutions are the next step in innovation and people who take part will have more value creation. How to get that message through?
Focus of the full moon event: Start-ups presenting their ‘MyData’ solution, and tell us why ‘MyData’ space is important. 5 minute pitches and 5 minutes for questions. Ask interested start-up companies: what does your company do and why is it important? Also inviting other people to talk for 5 minutes on why the data privacy space is about.
What else have we been up to? Explain to the rest of the people about our meetings with Julian Ranger, with Matthias and the “French-connection”. The Hub could engage people by working on collecting a use case library. Now there are use cases by cities in France. Matthias met with the city of San Francisco and will have a meeting with the IT people of the city soon. Sharing of the use cases in very important.
Johannes wrote up Julian Ranger’s message on his blog
Matthias reporting on his trip to the Bay Area. The French consulate meeting: There is much interest to continue and setting up meetings. Invitation only October dinner is being planned. Matthias also had meetings with Stanford Flourishing project and Berkeley Research Labs (incubator program).
Planning full moon meetings forward:
October: Brittany Kaiser…. and Personal data and what it has to do with the next innovation steps for the humans (Josep is in charge of the October meeting… yes Josep????)
November: MyData use cases for cities: better health, better research etc.

2 main points on the agenda today:
Upcoming event organizing. Who will present what in the meeting? Plan for the meeting.
What else is needed? who talks and when?
Who is coming?
Who is responsible of what?
Marketing plan for the event. Who does what?
How do we get Silicon Valley hub going… in other ways than the meet-up? How do we get some initial sponsor money?
Event on the 16th of July
We have decided how shall we structure the event, Seth should first introduce himself as our member and sponsor for this first event. Sari will give a 10-15 min presentation about My Data Global and its objectives, and the rest of us will talk about different issues for 5 minutes such as GDRP, Data in Health… Johannes will share the final structure of everybody’s speech in order to add a structure and publish it on Meetup, Eventbrite and on our own social networks, by tomorrow. Marc and Soren, will talk to Government related speakers from California and Denmark to see if we can have their presence on Tuesday.
We will then let people introduce themselves and we will do as much networking and try to enroll more people in our Hub, Slack Channels and into Helsinki’s conference in September.
About the Hub:
We agree on start working with big corporations, Non goverment agencies, and government-related agencies in order to let them know about us. The goal, to create a lobby and start getting their attention and engagement. We have created a slack channel called outreach to start working on this specific issue.
We agree on working with Startups and try to become a reference for the Startups related with MyData principles. Still need to decide how.
We need money for little and big things. Need to find out from whom can we get it. We will mention the “sponsorship” possibility in our next event.
We need to learn from the Japan Hub how to make ourselves more relevant. Sari is scheduling a call with them on July 18th, but need to be confirmed yet.
We need to work on specific topics for future events, such as: scamming, GDPR pro’s and con’s, human rights, data banking
We need to start working on a blog where we upload all the info that we generate, presentations, videos… and we need to ask for help to HQs to see if they can do the publishing, editing…
Next meeting August 8th, that’s the 2nd Thursday of August
2019-06-13
NODE 1011 Kearny St, San Francisco, CA 94133 San Francisco,
We decided to concentrate on two different ways of action
Full-moon Events
An ongoing event at the Node every full-moon
Should be focused on Ethics, Privacy and Personal Data.
Event on privacy and data rights: Ethical use of data. What new can we do with data now that we have private data?
Ongoing discussion on personal data? After this first meeting, we should be able to decide how to organize ourselves and what are our responsibilities.
The first event will be held on July 16 Tuesday, 2019 at Node from 6pm to 8 pm, then August 15th, September 13th
Marketing: Eventbrite, Facebook, Meetup.
What networks do we get connected with? IIW, etc.
What is success for the event? Engagement. 20-30 people that can make a difference. Accelerating the mission statement for MyData. We divided marketing work for the event. Node will provide space and wine, and Sari will bring chips.
Marketing MyData
We felt that important people do not know enough about MyData. We decided to line up meetings with important people to market MyData. We set up a sub-team to work on this. Sari, Jim and Mark will continue discussion on Slack.
